Groundhog Wisdom
Liminal season inspiration
Before we begin today…
With everything happening in the world, I feel it’s necessary to be clear about where I stand and what this space represents. This space is rooted in reverence for life, dignity, and the refusal to accept cruelty as normal. I stand firmly against violence, dehumanization, and the systems that excuse or enable them. Silence in the face of harm is not neutrality—it’s complicity. I will not practice that here.
These values are not up for debate. If they don’t align with yours, this space is not for you, and I encourage you to unsubscribe. Alignment matters here.
Wisdom from the Groundhog
This time of year sits right on the edge between winter and spring.
We’re entering the final month of the winter season, and both Imbolc and Groundhog Day remind us of the shift of seasons.
Since last week’s edition focused on Imbolc, it felt right for today to look at groundhogs through a very Ravynwood lens of practical meets magickal.
For the green witch, the groundhog is a symbol of Earth wisdom.
To see how that is, look to their habits:
Burrowing—Symbolizes going inward, doing the inner work.
Seasonal living—Groundhogs mate in February. Nature’s way of prepping for spring now. A reminder that there’s a lot happening in the unseen world.
Work and rest—Groundhogs are experts at balanced living. They know when to work, rest, and hibernate. Deep rest is part of their survival plan. While we may not be able to hibernate, rest and renewal can be part of our lives and be viewed as necessary.
Connection to the land—They eat what grows around them, making them connected to the land in a reciprocal way. Reciprocity is something we can learn about from the groundhog way of being. Local eating too, for that matter.
So, what can we take from this?
The groundhog reminds us that things are happening beneath the surface, even when they don’t seem so. We’re encouraged to trust our own timing, include rest in our lives, and stay connected to the cycles of nature for guidance and wisdom.
Things to try this week:
Reflect on how the earthy wisdom of the groundhog might help you in your day-to-day life.
Be inspired by this liminal space between winter and spring that the groundhog knows so well. Notice what’s happening in the natural world around you. What signs or changes do you notice? What wisdom or messages did you receive as you tuned in?
Explore the groundhog further to discover what significance (either practical or magickal) it has for you.
Here are a few fun facts to get you started:
Groundhogs are incredible engineers, digging burrow systems that can stretch to more than 60 feet long with multiple chambers, including some for sleeping, nesting, and getting away from predators.
Despite their earthbound appearance, groundhogs can climb trees and swim.
Groundhogs are true seasonal living masters, entering deep hibernation in winter. Their heart rate, body temperature, and metabolism dramatically slow down to conserve energy.
Their diet is entirely plant-based and includes grasses, dandelion, clover, leafy greens, and even seasonal fruits (along with farm crops to the dismay of farmers).
A Personal View on the Groundhog
Let me start with a bit of context. As a witch, loving the ones who aren’t very well loved by most, like groundhogs, snakes, or possums, is my domain. I understand the value of each living creature, and I honor that. So that comes first.
Nature is at the center of my personal practice. That includes working with animals as kindred spirit guides, messengers, and guardians. I draw inspiration and wisdom from them that I can apply to my own life.
There are a few ways I use to connect with animals, including augury, observation, meditation, emulation through shapeshifting exercises, and even telepathic communication*.
Since I’m influenced by shamanism*, I look to the groundhog for a greater understanding of ritual rebirth.
Here’s why: In shamanism, hibernation is often called “the death without dying,” so through this process, the groundhog becomes a master of this ritual rebirth process.
The humble groundhog can help me navigate liminal spaces and provide wisdom when I’m going through a process of rebirth.
*You might not know this, but I’ve been telepathically connecting to animals since the 90’s, and I’ve trained in the basics of shamanism too.
✨New Things
I have a few new things to share with you this week.
There’s a brand new guide to the paid collection of seasonal wisdom, rituals, and reflections. Find it here.
Of course, you can also access the full searchable archive here.
You can view all of the free and paid offers by clicking here. Your support is so appreciated.
The Imbolc Journal is available through this week yet, and you can pick up your copy here. There are other fun printable items in the store too, so if the Imbolc Journal isn’t for you, check out one of the others.
If you share your life with horses, I invite you to follow along at The Midlife Rider Project. It’s just getting started, but so far there are 6 episodes of the podcast. I’ve also launched a brand new offer there called Listening Sessions. You can learn more about them here.
Here’s a fun fact to close out today. According to NOAA, Punxsutawney Phil is right in predicting the weather about 35% of the time.
Thanks ever so much for being here.
Bright blessings,
Karen
