A Green Witch's April
On tentative greens, middle seasons, and the magick of showing up
Where I live, March can’t make up its mind about which weather fits, so it tries them all on for size.
Some days it snows. Other days we have rain. Or sleet. Maybe both.
It can feel like spring in the afternoon and be like winter again by sunset.
Some years the snow lingers far into the month. Other years a false spring rolls in all at once and disappears just as fast.
April is different.
When it arrives, the rest of the natural world seems to follow along into springtime, like some sort of invisible signal has been sounded.
The grass starts coming back. Hesitantly. Rain mostly replaces snow.
The morning air shifts in some way that’s hard to name, and there’s a warmth in the light that wasn’t there last week. You recognize these things even when you can’t quite name them.
April is the first true month of spring where I live. Not the beginning of the season so much as the point where nature finally feels like it’s committed.
That nuance matters more to me with each year that passes.
The Work of the Middle Month
Nature moves differently through each part of a season.
Early spring wakes things up.
Mid-spring takes root.
Late spring flowers.
Each part feeds what comes next. March prepares. April grows. May flowers.
You can see this progression in the color of the greens if you pay attention.
Spring green is tentative. Like it’s not entirely sure it’s allowed to be green yet, but it keeps going anyway, getting a little more green each day.
In the month of April, we’ll see green develop.
Starting out vulnerable and uncertain. By summer it will hit its peak color. But for now, it’s a shade only found during this month.
What’s Happening Right Now
This is the month where the cooperation happening in nature is easy to see.
Nothing grows alone. The rain softens the ground. The soil feeds the roots. The roots feed the leaves. The leaves feed the insects. The insects feed the birds. Everything is working together whether we notice it or not.
Most of us have been taught to push through. To make things happen on our own. But April keeps showing us something different. Growth that comes from the right conditions, from the right timing, from just showing up.
As a green witch, I find that grounding. The land isn’t forcing anything to happen. It’s doing what it does, and somehow all of it adds up to spring.
Proof Arrives in April
This is when buds turn into leaves. Nests become nurseries. The season starts leaving signs you can’t miss.
The first violets. The smell of the air after a good rain. The way birds settle back into the places they’ll call home. How those first pale greens stop looking quite so fragile by month’s end.
These small things that draw you in become their own kind of participation in the season. It always has been so.
If you’ve been feeling the pull to work a little deeper with this season, this is where it begins…
